Wallet passes can surface automatically on a user’s lock screen without any action from you. Both Apple Wallet and Google Wallet use pass data to determine when a pass is relevant — prompting the user at the right time or place. These notifications are triggered by the wallet app itself based on data embedded in the pass. No server-side action is required once the pass is issued.

Expiry

When a pass has an expiry date set, both Apple Wallet and Google Wallet will alert the user as the pass approaches its expiry.
  • Apple Wallet — surfaces the pass on the lock screen in the days leading up to expiry and displays a visible countdown on the pass face
  • Google Wallet — highlights the expiry date prominently on the pass
Supported pass types: Offer Set expiry when issuing a pass:
Expiry is set per-pass, not per-template — different passes from the same template can have different expiry dates.

Event time

Event passes are automatically surfaced on the user’s lock screen as the event start time approaches.
  • Apple Wallet — shows the pass on the lock screen before and during the event window based on the startDate
Supported pass types: Event The startDate is set on the template and applies to all passes issued from it:
No additional configuration is needed — Apple Wallet handles the timing automatically.

Location

When a pass has a location set, Apple Wallet will surface the pass on the lock screen when the user’s device is near that location.
  • Apple Wallet — shows a lock screen notification with the venue name when the user arrives in the vicinity
Supported pass types: Event Add a location to the event template:
The name is shown in the lock screen prompt. address appears on the back of the pass. Both latitude and longitude are required for location-based triggering.
Location notifications are an Apple Wallet feature only. Google Wallet does not support geofence-based pass surfacing.
